Father's Day in Australia is on the first Sunday in September (not to be confused with Mother's Day, which is on the second Sunday in May). So, while it isn't on the same date each year, it always falls on a Sunday, giving most dads a welcome day off to spend with their loved ones. In 2026, Father's Day lands on Sunday, 6 September.
While the US and UK celebrate in June, Australia and New Zealand mark Father's Day on the first Sunday of September. There's no official record of why, though it's commonly put down to spacing the day out from Mother's Day and the June rush. Either way, we think a celebration at the start of spring suits Aussie dads perfectly.
Don't panic, late shoppers have options. Chocolate, socks, books and grooming kits are reliable same-day saves from your local store, or for click-and-collect, and a heartfelt card can carry a humble gift a very long way. If all else fails, a homemade voucher for breakfast in bed buys you until next weekend.
Little hands make the most treasured Father's Day presents. Think a DIY coupon book (one free car wash, one uninterrupted nap), hand-drawn cards, a decorated photo frame, or breakfast in bed with the kids as head chefs. Pair a homemade gift with something small from his wish list and you've covered all bases.
Absolutely. Father's Day is for all the father figures in our lives, including grandads, stepdads, uncles, foster dads and family friends who've stepped up. If you're celebrating several special men in one day, small thoughtful gifts, a shared meal or a group activity can spread the love and make their day.
Earlier than you think, especially if you're ordering online or after personalised Father's Day gifts, which can take longer to arrive. Aim to have gifts sorted a couple of weeks before the first Sunday in September, and keep an eye on delivery cut-off dates so everything lands in time for the big day.
