Yoga & Pilates Equipment FAQs
What's the difference between a yoga mat and a pilates mat?
Yoga mats tend to be thinner than pilates mats. They are usually around 3–5mm, with a grippy surface designed to keep you stable during standing poses and flowing sequences. While pilates mats are usually thicker, at around 8–15mm, providing more cushioning for spine-focused exercises done lying down. That said, many people use a standard yoga mat for pilates at home, particularly when starting out and it works well for most beginner to intermediate routines.
What does a pilates ring do?
A pilates ring (sometimes called a magic circle) is a flexible resistance tool used to add light to moderate resistance during mat exercises. It's mostly used between the thighs, ankles or hands to engage and isolate specific muscle groups, particularly the glutes, chest and arms. It's a simple piece of pilates equipment that makes a noticeable difference to the intensity of mat-based workouts.
Are cork yoga mats worth it?
Cork yoga mats have a few advantages over standard PVC mats. Cork is naturally antimicrobial, which means it resists bacteria and odour over time, a practical bonus if you practice regularly. The surface also becomes grippier when wet, making it a particularly good choice for hot yoga. They do tend to be heavier than foam mats, so it's worth considering if you're carrying yours to and from a studio.
