FAQs
The decision to transform the Target network, and particularly the very difficult decision to close some of our stores is not one that is made lightly, but one that is necessary to improve the commercial viability of the business and to support the thousands of people we employ. In order to do this successfully in the current retail environment (and in a way that truly supports our customers), we know that we need to adapt our business – to make it smaller, more focused, less complex and more digitally enabled so we can better serve our customers both instore and online.
There will be 10 to 25 large format Target stores and 50 Target Country stores which will close over the next twelve months. A number of stores will also be converting to Kmart where the store is suitable to do so. All remaining Target stores will continue trading as Target. The network will continue to be reviewed on an ongoing basis to support our transition to a smaller, more focused and more optimised business. Importantly, our online business will still be available 24 hours a day. We’ll be increasing our digital capabilities, so that we can continue to meet growing demand in this space.

Target’s online business is available and accessible across the country at www.target.com.au, with our entire range and additional, online-exclusive ranges also available online. These products can be delivered to any location across the country as selected by customers, and also for click and collection across our Target store portfolio.
In regards to support for regional locations, in addition to increasing awareness of our online business, we will:
- Form focus groups of customers from areas without stores to continue to seek their feedback on Target’s broader online offering and how Target can support them post store closures
- Communicate digitally with our existing customers through social channels to outline our closure timings, whilst explaining the features of our online business and how to shop our digital channels
- Encourage customers to sign up to our e-newsletter and register their details within our MyAccount
- Offer delivery options to customers post store closure
- Provide click and collection options for customers from other Target stores, Kmart stores and other collection points where appropriate
These changes have been made following the first phase of a strategic review of the business. For some time, the Target business has needed to transform to a smaller, more focused and less complex business. Whilst the coronavirus has accelerated this need, changes to the store network and operating model have been a focus for some time.
Your nearest Target store can be located on Target’s website by entering your post code. Please go to www.target.com.au/store-finder to search for stores near to you.
Yes. There is no change to Target’s online operation or the range available online. We would encourage all customers to visit us at www.target.com.au or via our app, from which Target’s full store range, and also an additional online exclusive range, can be searched, viewed and purchased.
Yes. Click & Collect will be made available from a number of collection points, including Target stores and, over time, Kmart stores and other points of collection where appropriate for customers.
Yes, Target gift cards can be used online at target.com.au
As is currently the case, all items purchased from Target online can easily be returned via the post or to any Target store within 60 days from delivery.
If this is inconvenient, returns can also be made via the post. To return items via the post, please call Target’s Customer Support Team on 1300 753 567 or email customersupport@target.com.au to request your ‘e-parcel returns slip’. Please download, print and fill in the returns form and put the returns form with the items that you are returning into a suitable parcel or box. When you receive the ‘e-parcel returns slip’, please place it on your parcel and drop it into your nearest Australia Post outlet.
The changes to our store network will occur over the next 12 months and so there is currently no impact to this. We will be updating our website with relevant changes as they occur.
Target recognises that these actions will have a significant effect on a number of our team members, and we are committed to supporting them through this process. All team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to Kmart will receive an offer of employment from Kmart.
For our Target team members that are unable to be redeployed, they will be given consideration for new roles created in Kmart and Catch as those businesses continue to grow. In addition, Wesfarmers has established a cross-divisional working group to identify redeployment opportunities for affected team members, including in Bunnings and Officeworks.
With the majority of the proposed Target store closures planned to occur in the 2021 calendar year, this provides considerable time to explore all available options to redeploy affected team members. Target team members impacted by store closures will be given priority consideration for new roles created in Kmart and Catch as these businesses continue to grow. In addition, Wesfarmers has established a cross-divisional working group to identify redeployment opportunities for affected team members, including in Bunnings and Officeworks. Where there are no Wesfarmers businesses in town, we’re also working with other employers to try and find opportunities for our team. Target team members who are unable to be redeployed will be provided with access to support services, along with all entitlements.
