Our commitment to more sustainable cotton

By July 2021, we will source 100 per cent of our cotton more sustainably for our own-branded clothing, towel and bedding ranges*.

Cotton is an important material for Target and supports the livelihoods of over 250 million people around the world. Although the cotton industry has achieved significant improvements in resource efficiency and sustainable farming practices in the past decade, there remain social and environmental challenges in some countries, such as high pesticide and water usage.

As a large cotton user we believe we have a responsibility to source cotton more sustainably and have set an ambitious target to source 100 per cent of our cotton fabric more sustainably for our clothing, towel and bedding ranges (excluding footwear, accessories and all functional trims (e.g. zips) and decorative details (e.g. lace or ribbons)) by July 2021.

Our Partnership with BCI

As part of this commitment, Target has recently become a proud member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI); the largest cotton sustainability program in the world.

BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future, by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity. Better Cotton accounts for nearly 20 per cent of global cotton production and over 300 global brands are involved with the initiative.

BCI is truly a shared effort, encompassing people and organisations all the way from farms to fashion and textile brands.

Through our partnership with BCI and our relationships with our suppliers, we’re working together to ensure a better future for the cotton industry and those whose lives depend on it.

The Better Cotton standard is our primary mechanism for achieving the 100 per cent more sustainable cotton commitment, along with recycled cotton and organic cotton.

Since the launch of the commitment, Target have conducted BCI training for team members and suppliers, and we have sourced cotton as Better Cotton against products from suppliers in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Thailand, USA and India
