Tips For Uneven Skin Tone: Beauty 101 by Alice McGenniss-Destro
Tips For Uneven Skin Tone: Beauty 101

We all want perfect skin, but between uneven colour, sun spots, blemishes and wrinkles, the path to a healthy, even complexion can seem like an uphill battle. Adding to your skin care woes, the beauty market is saturated with products that promise to give you a radiant complexion in no time. Lucky for you, we've done the groundwork to arm you with the beauty know-how.

What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?

The main causes of uneven skin tone are sun spots, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and hormones. An excess of melanin in the skin due to exposure to the sun then creates freckles, and eventually dark spots.

Exfoliate

The best way to improve your skin tone is to exfoliate regularly (at least twice a week). Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. This top layer is usually the sole culprit of discolouration because of its direct contact with sunlight. If you continue to remove this top layer, the skin underneath should be even and normal.

Use SPF Religiously

Regardless of your age, you should be using sunscreen religiously. If you find sunscreen too oily, opt for a moisturiser with at least SPF 15 properties.

Fake It With Makeup

For an immediate fix, use makeup to mask any problem areas.

Step 1

Start by prepping your skin with a primer or moisturiser that contains SPF. Not only will this protect your from the sun, it will also fill in large pores and smooth over fine lines.

Step 2

Apply foundation to your chin, cheeks and nose. Then pat- don't rub- concealer underneath your eyes and across any blemishes.

Step 3

Contour your cheeks with bronzer, and dab blush on the apples of your cheeks for a healthy, flushed complexion.

Step 4

Lastly, set the look with powder.
