Target has partnered with CARE Australia to launch the ‘Safe Motherhood Program’ to the Gazipur region of Bangladesh.
CARE Australia is an international humanitarian aid organisation fighting global poverty with a special focus on empowering women and girls to bring lasting change to their communities. CARE has been working in Bangladesh since 1949.
The Safe Motherhood Program supports women and their families in Gazipur by delivering vital pre & post natal education programs and by connecting them to lifesaving healthcare services.
The need for this program is shown in the alarming numbers – despite rapid development, mother and child mortality remains too high in Bangladesh. This is caused by a lack of awareness about reproductive, maternal and child health issues, with the poorest members of the community most at risk.
With Target's support, the Safe Motherhood Program will improve the lives of women and children in Gazipur.
The partnership, over a three year period, will reduce:
- The number of mothers dying from childbirth-related causes
- The number of newborn babies dying with 28 days of life
- The number of children dying under the age of five
This will be achieved by:
- Increasing the number of women receiving antenatal and post natal healthcare
- Increasing the number of newborn babies receiving skilled healthcare at birth, and up to the age of 5.
Target has a number of factory partners based in the region. By having a presence in places like Gazipur we can play an important role in improving the lives of not only the factory workers but also the wider community as a whole.
