The Alannah & Madeline Foundation

Since 2008, Target has supported the Alannah & Madeline Foundation through our 'Bags for Bags' campaign across Australia, with profits from the sale of our reusable Target bags going to The Alannah and Madeline Foundation's Buddy Bags Program to support children in need. The Buddy Bags, contain essential items such as pyjamas, toiletries, a journal, book and soft toy are provided to children who are required to leave their homes, often at short notice, due to the threat of violence or abuse.

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity aimed at keeping children safe from violence. The Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged 6 and 3, who with their mother and 32 others, were tragically killed at Port Arthur on April 28, 1996. Its vision is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment.

Since November 2008, Target has donated over $1.7 million to the foundation to support their fantastic work.

50,000 Bag Milestone

Walter Mikac, Founding Patron of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, joined Target Australia Managing Director, Stuart Machin on the 22nd of October 2014 to pack the Foundation’s 50,000th Buddy Bag for children entering emergency accommodation.

Dr Judith Slocombe, CEO of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation said Buddy Bags are a simple, but vitally important component of the Foundation’s work in keeping children safe from violence. “It sounds like such a simple idea, but receiving a Buddy Bag helps make a very traumatic experience a little easier for children to endure and also commences the recovery process by showing children there is someone out there who cares for them,” she said.

Walter Mikac, Founding Patron of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation said children are often the forgotten victims of family violence and that’s why the Buddy Bags Program has played a vital role over the last 7 years. “Children are impacted, but it is not their fault,” he said. “This program helps them to recover. It shows children the importance of empathy and caring for others, and helps instil a sense of hope in children escaping violence.”

Dr Slocombe said the bittersweet milestone of reaching 50,000 children would not have been possible without the help of our Principal Partner, Target Australia. “Target Australia has supported the Buddy Bags Program since 2008 through their ‘Bags for Bags’ campaign, where customers purchase a reusable bag with all funds going towards a Buddy Bag for a child,” she said.

Managing Director of Target Australia, Stuart Machin said the key to the success of the partnership over the past six years is the generosity of Target customers in helping children escape from violence..

As one of our key national partnerships, Target’s support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation reflects our commitment to ensuring Australian families are both safe and happy. We thank our customers for their continued support of the partnership, which has helped to deliver 50,000 Buddy Bags,” he said. “The Alannah and Madeline Foundation make a very real difference to the lives of Australian children and Target is proud to commit our ongoing support.” Target Australia will step up its ‘Bags for Bags’ campaign by releasing a stylish new fundraising tote bag. “We have already received great feedback for the new tote bag. It’s an item that can be used beyond the shopping centre and we’re hoping that this bag will receive even greater support from our customers” Mr Machin said.

Walter Mikac spoke about the excitement in seeing Alannah’s drawing on a Target bag and how thankful of the support that Target provides. “The day I saw a person carrying a red shopping bag with Alannah’s drawing on it, I smiled my heart out that day and every single time I go shopping I use one of the bags,”
“I can’t thank Target enough for the difference they have made to so many kids lives” Mr Mikac said.

The new tote bag is available in all Target stores around the country for $4.00 with $1.00 going to the Buddy Bags program.
