While the Lion in the Wild wardrobe has seen a mammoth injection of colour this year, it's really no surprise that I go back to my black and white roots every once in a while. Truth be told, what really attracted me to this particular dress from Target's new premium range, Damsel in a Dress, is its eye-catching graphic print, made much more chic in its monochrome glory.
I wanted to show this shift dress styled with and without a belt, both looks that work really well. As I'm a little bustier than most, I sometimes find that the shift makes me look, well, a lot bigger than my small frame. In this case, it's easily fixed with a long necklace, a stylish metal harness or, the most obvious choice, a belt. However, this printed dress from Target is cut in a way that allows it to be worn with or without any of my sneaky slimming accessories. The soft crepe fabric layered over a silky lining always helps with that too, allowing the dress to move freely, showing off your body (without actually showing off your body, if you know what I mean). On the other hand, styling it with a belt does add a whole new element to the look, creating a new horizontal line and simultaneously synching in the waist.
What I really love about this dress is its versatility that comes from a classic black and white print, as well as a slightly longer on-the-knee length. While I'd be comfortable wearing this to the office with a pair of pointed pumps, it's also suited to afterwork drinks, a weekend lunch or even a spring wedding.
A little pricey for Target, you ask? Well, can I just spread the word out to my loyal followers that these garments consist of such beautiful & high quality fabrics, they are worth your every penny. I know I myself would prefer to spend my money on premium product, as opposed to being ripped by high profile brands where you pay for the name rather than quality.
Having sampled two of the ‘Damsel in a Dress’ styles personally, one of the first points I noted was the correct sizing. I am curvaceous – there’s no denying that. But since losing most of my baby weight I’m back to a pretty standard size 12, and these dresses couldn’t have fitted me any better. I find these days that sizes are generally ‘small fits’ and don’t cater for the odd lump & bump, but I was ecstatic with how these two fitted me.
There is something about a dress that makes an outfit effortless. Throwing on one piece with a few favourite accessories and you're off. No layering, no coordinating and no colour matching. The simpler the better.
Finding the perfect dress…well that's a different story all together.
